Penarth Cemetery

Opened 1903

Penarth Cemetery was first opened 1903, after Penarth Urban District Council purchased the land. The site was originally set on 5 acres, but further adjoining land was purchased in 1923 to extend the cemetery.

There have been more than 11,000 burials since the cemetery was first opened, and it continues to offer full interment until the space is completely full. Penarth Cemetery is home to the memorials of 13 casualties from World War 1 and 39 from World War 2.

Barry Cemetery

(Merthyr Dyfan) Opened 1889

Barry (Merthyr Dyfan) Cemetery, located in the in the town of Barry in South Wales, is a historic cemetery that has served the local community since the late 19th century. The cemetery is situated on a hill overlooking the town and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

The cemetery was established in 1888 and was originally called the Barry Cemetery. It was renamed the Barry Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery in 1953, after the nearby parish of Merthyr Dyfan. The cemetery covers an area of approximately 18 acres and is divided into several sections, including a consecrated section for Anglican burials, a non-conformist section, and a Jewish section.

Western Cemetery

Opened 1936

Western Cemetery is a major cemetery located in Cardiff, South Wales. It was first opened in July 1936 and offers a wide range of grave types. Lawn memorials, traditional graves and cremated remains are just some of the memorials suitable for the cemetery.

Traditional memorials are available for Muslim, Greek Orthodox and Jewish burials, and there is always a Jewish prayer house. One of the largest cemeteries in Cardiff, Western Cemetery also includes a garden for the scattering of cremated remains.

Northern Cemetery

Opened 2021

Northern Cemetery is located close to the existing Thornhill Cemetery, which is one of Cardiff’s largest cemeteries in the city and is rapidly growing.

The new site is set to provide burial space for the next 35 – 40 years, aiding to the existing Thornhill Cemetery.

Thornhill Cemetery

Opened 1952

Thornhill Cemetery was opened in August 1952, with the Crematorium opening the following year. This famous Cardiff Cemetery is located in the Thornhill area, and contains two chapels – Wenallt Chapel and Briwnant Chapel. There are a number of different sections for different grave types, including eight Gardens of Remembrance for the scattering of cremated remains.

Thornhill Cemetery was named Cemetery of the Year in both 2019 and 2020 by the Memorial Awareness Board. It is one of the largest cemeteries in Cardiff, currently holding over 3000 cremations and around 700 burials each year. It is due to be extended in 2021 to provide burial space in Cardiff for a further 35-40 years.

Pantmawr Cemetery

Opened 1931

Pantmawr Cemetery in Whitchurch, Cardiff, was originally opened in July 1931 to meet the ever-growing demand for burial space in Cardiff. It is located in the Whitchurch area and is also referred to as Whitchurch Cemetery.   

The cemetery was expanded in 2005 to continue to keep up with the demand, and now has an estimated 14 years of space left before the cemetery grounds are full. A refurbishment project took place in 2010 to repair old stonework around the grounds.  

Amongst those buried in Pantmawr Cemetery are memorials for 16 casualties who lost their lives during the Second World War.
